Though it may seem like Labor Day just happened, September is drawing to a close and we’re already looking ahead to Halloween.

While we often look for serene settings, spectacular service, or a standout spa in our stays, in the spirit of spooky season, we’ve found some hotels that pair a history of hauntings with great hospitality.

This lineup of stays is for those of you who like to lean into the season—the ones who started pulling out the fake spiderwebs and flickering candles the second the temperature dipped below 70. Our picks span the range of spookiness, from legends that just add a little intrigue to famously haunted history.

If you’re planning a Halloween getaway, these haunted hotels are worth the trip.

Omni Mount Washington Resort

Opened in 1902 in New Hampshire’s White Mountains, Omni Mount Washington is exactly the kind of grand historic hotel you’d expect to be low-key haunted, and if you believe the rumors, it is. The hotel is widely regarded as one of the most haunted in New England (which is saying something) and was even featured on an episode of Ghost Hunters.

The property was built by Joseph Stickney, an industrialist who passed away just a year after it was completed, in 1903. Ownership of the hotel was passed on to his widow, Carolyn, who went on to marry Prince Aymon de Faucigny-Lucinge and was subsequently known as Princess Carolyn. She was known to spend her summers in her favorite suite, Room 314, where her four-poster bed remains to this day.

Despite passing away at her personal home in Rhode Island, it’s said she still remains at the hotel in spirit, watching guests arrive from the lobby’s balcony and leaving traces of her presence in Room 314. Guests at the resort can book the room, which has been recently refreshed, though rest assured, the four-poster bed is original.

Beyond haunted footsteps and the polite knocks of the hotel’s past matriarch, enjoy more festive activities during the resort’s Halloweekend celebration, which includes wagon rides, a movie night that gets spookier as it gets later, pumpkin carving, a kids’ trick-or-treat costume parade, and a late-night costume party for adults.

The Don CeSar

This one is for the ones who want the suggestion of spookiness as opposed to full-on bumps in the night (and some world-class beaches as well, because why not).

The Don CeSar is one of the country’s most iconic resorts — its distinctive pink Moorish-style exterior has earned it the nickname “The Pink Palace”. It opened nearly 100 years ago in 1928 by Thomas Rowe and hosted a who’s who of the Gatsby Era (including F. Scott Fitzgerald himself). Naturally, with so much history comes the rumblings of hauntings.

The hotel earned its name from the opera Maritana, and that’s where the lore begins. Legend has it that Thomas Rowe fell in love with Lucinda de Guzman, a star in that opera, during a trip to London. In classic Romeo + Juliet fashion, they were forbidden to be together, and in the end, Rowe returned to America, eventually building the Don CeSar and naming it after the opera’s hero.

The couple never reconnected in life, but following Rowe’s death in 1940, there have been reports of seeing a man in a white suit and a woman in a dress, the couple strolling the beach together in the afterlife. A smattering of other hauntings have been reported at the property: Rowe seen around the hotel, footsteps, reflections in mirrors, but this one is certainly the least spooky on the list.

Book it if you want a killer beach vacay with a little tragic backstory, and maybe keep your eyes peeled for Rowe and Lucinda.

Historic Inns of Annapolis

If there’s a direct correlation between history and hauntings, it should come as no surprise that Historic Inns of Annapolis crops up on Historic Hotels of America’s “Most Haunted” list year after year.

The property is actually a collection of three historic buildings: Governor Calvert House, a home to colonial governors dating back to the 17th century; Maryland Inn, a Revolutionary-era inn said to have hosted George Washington; and Robert Johnson House, once home to, unsurprisingly, the Johnson family, and the newest of the three, dating back to 1773.

Each one of these properties is purportedly haunted, though the spookiest of the bunch is Maryland Inn. Like with our previous pick, this haunting centers around a love story gone wrong.

The story goes that a naval captain was returning from sea to his fiancée, who was waiting for him at the Maryland Inn. He was struck by a carriage and died, never to be reunited with his love, who died the same day. “The Bride” is said to haunt Room 405, reportedly pacing and opening windows, while the Captain is said to be seen downstairs in the basement taproom, Drummer’s Lot Pub.

Unlike Rowe and Lucinda, the ghostly couple is never seen together, separated even in the afterlife. Other specters of the usual variety (old soldiers, mournful women, children as a source of unseen giggling) are said to haunt this hotel as well.

Beyond the hotels, Annapolis comes to life during October, with historic ghost tours, spooktacular concerts, witchy pub crawls, and giant pumpkins on display throughout town.

Hotel Sorrento

While most of our haunted hotels on this list are clustered along the East Coast, with this next pick, we’re headed West. Hotel Sorrento was originally opened in Seattle’s First Hill neighborhood in 1909, and has a storied history, hosting creatives, housing students, and even serving as a Red Cross headquarters during WWI.

Despite its many lives hosting all sorts of guests, the spectre haunting this hotel isn’t anyone who ever set foot in it. The hotel’s resident ghost is that of American writer Alice B. Toklas, who spent her adolescence in the area. Though she ultimately moved to Paris and spent the rest of her years there fostering the avant-garde scene, she’s said to be seen (and heard) around the hotel’s halls and gardens, with the energy seemingly concentrated in Room 408.

The hotel leans into spooky season, with a Witches’ Tea event happening on weekends in October and every day in the week leading up to Halloween. The haunted take on afternoon tea includes full tea service and a selection of sweet and savory bites. Guests are encouraged to arrive in costume to get into the spirit of the season.

There’s even an event the hotel’s resident writer ghost could get behind: the Silent Reading Party. Hosted in the cozy Fireside Room, settle in with a good book and enjoy live music, dinner, and drinks.

Kehoe House

There’s something about Savannah that lends itself particularly well to spooky season. Perhaps it’s the dramatic Spanish moss, the quiet squares, and the many historic homes that serve as the setting for some seriously eerie stories.

The Kehoe House is one such stately home. Now a boutique hotel operated by {verdigreen}, the hotel was built in 1892 by William Kehoe and served as a family home, a boarding house, and a funeral parlor before becoming the polished B&B it is today.

It’s said that the spirits of William Kehoe and his wife, Anne, can be spotted and heard around the hotel, along with children’s giggles and the feeling of touches from small hands, possibly the echoes of the ten children who grew up in the home. Paranormal activity is said to be most commonly felt in Rooms 201 and 203 for those of you bold enough to book them specifically.

Savannah is chock-full of ghost tours to take, and they might even bring you past another local {verdigreen} property, Eliza Thompson House. Legend has it you can catch the ghost of James Thompson, a Civil War veteran who returned home only to be kicked by a spooked horse and die in the house.

Whether you’re poking about Bonaventure Cemetery after dark with just a lantern to guide you or keeping your activities strictly limited to daylight hours with a costumed stroll through the squares, this is one city that’s sure to set an appropriately spooky tone this Halloween.
